Meet Tallulah Rae: Birth Photography at UT Medical Center | Knoxville, Tennessee

Having children of my own, and knowing how fleeting the moment is when you’re giving birth (even if you’re in labor for hours), I understand the importance of remembering that time that you meet your little one for the first time. Even if you remember the last birth, each one is different, unique. Every one of us comes into the world a different way, and capturing those moments are so important and so special. Spending a few hours with Sara and Grant, and watching their world change forever the second that they meant Tallulah Rae? It’s why I do what I do.

The amazing power that our bodies have as women has always astounded me. Watching Sara go through labor naturally was one of the more humbling things that I’ve been part of in my life. It was those in-between moments – when contractions were hard, she toughed them out like a champion, and in between them? She was the most calm, serene, at ease mother-to-be that I’ve ever met.

Sara wrote a gorgeous recap and review of having me there to photograph the birth, and I’m so happy that I get to share it with you:

“I am beyond thankful that my husband and I decided to have Whitney document our delivery at UT. Whitney photographed some of the sweetest moments in our relationship. It was powerful to see the last few minutes as a family of two and then the birth of our daughter and becoming a family of three. I asked Whitney to capture my husband seeing our baby for the first time because I knew I wouldn’t be fixated on him during that moment and I wanted to experience it through pictures. Whitney not only captured that moment beautifully but I was able to see my reactions and our first bonding experience. I fell even more in love with my husband on our daughter’s day of birth and am beyond grateful that Whitney was able to document it.

My favorite pictures are seeing his pure reactions following the birth. Whitney captured him crying and then laying down next to my face telling me we did it and that we had a daughter. I get choked up every time I look at those photos and think of that moment. I would never have been able to fully appreciate this or even remember it if I did not have these pictures. Whitney also beautifully captured when our girl first latched and I breastfed for the first time. I was riding such a high during the birth that honestly my first defining moment of truly feeling like a mom was about 30 minutes later. I am so beyond grateful that this moment was captured and I can’t wait to show it to my daughter one day.

Whitney was more than professional. She melted into the background of the hospital room, and I was not even aware that these pictures were being taken. Whitney’s previous career as a nurse definitely added to her bedside manner. She came to the room when I was 8cm and then she left when our family was ready to have alone time. Looking back, that couldn’t have been better timing. It would have been distracting having her there any earlier and she was able to read the room and leave to allow us to bond.”

“Sadly, my mom and dad were unable to come down and be with us during the birth. These pictures made them feel as if they were there. As grandparents they appreciated the pictures more than words can truly express.

I looked at these pictures over and over again the first 2 weeks of our daughter’s life. I found myself starring at them during the late night feedings. I felt empowered every time I set eyes on them. Giving birth can be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Anyone who is thinking about doing birth photos should go ahead and make the decision to do them. They are worth it and every mom deserves being able to relive the positive sweet moments when their family expanded.”

Another amazing part of this incredible experience was seeing the love and support between Sara and Grant. The encouragement, the love, and the excitement to meet their new baby girl was felt by everyone in the room. They were the perfect pair – that is, until they met Tallulah Rae. Capturing that moment that their lives completely changed and they were instantly ready to take on the world as a fierce trio was truly my honor.

Grant said a few amazing words, too. Thank you so much for this phenomenal review, Grant!

“When my wife said she had someone to photograph our birth, I was worried a photographer would interfere with the experience. As I now reflect back on the birth of our little girl, Tallulah, I am not sure where the photographer was through all of it! The only evidence of Whitney’s presence in that room that day are the indelible photos of our little girl coming into the world. Whitney was a true professional moving about and capturing the intensity, love, and hard work that were on display during the birth of our daughter. I’ve always told my wife she is a strong woman but these pictures made her see that for herself. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking to capture the emotion of bringing another human into the world.”

Your life, it’s an amazing story, and each chapter begins and ends with these amazing cliffhanger moments, waiting for what’s going to happen next. Part of the reason that I love newborn and family photography is that I get to capture those moments. Birth photography holds an extra special place in my heart, because it truly is the beginning of something so amazing. I want to be the one who helps you share these moments with the world – or just with those that are closest to you.

To Sara and Grant: thank you both for sharing this part of your journey with me, letting me capture these incredible moments, and then sharing them. I know that Tallulah Rae is one lucky girl to have two amazingly incredible, strong parents like you.

Fresh 48 Sessions: Newborn Photography in Knoxville, TN

One of my absolute favorite things to do is a Fresh 48 session. If you aren’t familiar with the term, a fresh 48 session is a session the first 48 hours that your little one is born. Oftentimes, this means coming and meeting you at the hospital. These are the precious little moments that you’ll want to remember forever, and in all the haze and craziness of IVs, nurses, doctors, lactation consultations and more, they are easily forgotten. One of the BEST parts is when you’re adding an additional child to the family, and your first born gets to meet that sweet little one for the first time. There’s really nothing like it.

Your little one’s little hospital hat, that sweet swaddle, and all the love that you didn’t know that you had in you all poured out into that new baby – that’s what a fresh 48 session is about. Capturing your new life and those sweet moments in a lifestyle setting, creating images that you’ll cherish forever.

There’s also the awesome part about getting that first family photo. And your pictures don’t have to be perfectly posed – this should be what your new normal looks like. You with your new little bundle of love, getting to know their cries, studying each and every inch of their face, and more.

Beyond getting to capture those special moments, sometimes it’s just really great to have me there to have professional photos for a baby announcement. That hospital photo (you know it- the one with your baby all swaddled in their little bedside cart) is such a great way to announce to the world that your family has grown.

Lifestyle Session vs. Studio Session: What’s Right For You?

One of the reasons that I love doing what I do is that I get to provide gorgeous memories that will last a lifetime. The reality of the situation, though, is that everyone wants something different. That’s one of the amazing challenges that comes with being a photographer. I get to meet so many amazing people and clients that let me bring out the personalities in their families, their children, and their teeny tiny precious little newborn babies. One of the hardest things for clients to decide, though, is whether or not they want a studio session or a lifestyle session, so I’m here to help you make that tough choice!

One of the huge benefits of a studio session is that you have a lot more control of the situation – you’re able to get those perfectly posed moments when it comes to a newborn baby. We have the advantage of having all of my props, the perfect lighting, the nice warm studio (I keep it warm in here to keep the baby happy!). These are the more traditional form of newborn photos – and one that I LOVE doing. I love getting creative with your newborn photos to capture their little personalities and give you a classic portrait to remember forever.

Lifestyle sessions, on the other hand, are a little more raw and unposed. We get to capture your new baby in your home – with your new normal. We can do things like incorporate pets, go to various different parts of your home that have special significance to you. Right when you get home with your new family member, you’ll find that life looks a little different. The beauty of lifestyle photography is that I can help you capture and remember that – the lounging on the couch with the dog and a snuggly newborn or sweet moments with your baby laid out in his or her new crib. It’s what life is really like with a newborn.

With your studio session, we can do fun things like choose props that match the decor of your nursery or your home. We can showcase your favorite hair accessories for the baby (and trust me, I’ve got some great ones of my own, too!). There’s just something about those sweet portraits of your little one all curled up and snuggly and sleeping.

Either way, your life looks a little different now. You’ve got a new, very special member of the family. Lifestyle or studio session? Ultimately, it’s really about your personal preference. I’m happy to accommodate whatever it is that feels right to capture you and your growing family. Follow your heart – and if you need a little guidance, I’m happy to talk it out further with you.

Welcome to the world, Sweet Baby Kayleigh!

Occasionally, you have a photography session where everything seems to go right. The baby eats well, she sleeps, and she lets you pose her without fussing, and she never poops. Throw in three AMAZING grins, and you would be describing this.

How stinking cute is she?!

I love being a newborn photographer. How many people can say their job is snuggling sweet babies like Kayleigh and getting to be a small part of her journey? Even on the days when I am covered with poop and the babies were fussy, I would not trade this for the world.

I love what I do. I love helping to capture this fleeting moments. One day, the little outfits will be outgrown, the toys will be discarded, and they will be grown. The images will last forever.
